This three year study aims to better understand people who experience complex emotions, with a view to improving treatment, support and outcomes for people who struggle with them. We want to learn more about what influences complex emotions and how they change over time. To do this will recruit a diverse group of up to 300 people who experience a range of difficulties with complex emotions.
People will complete a screening set of questions online to ensure they meet our research criteria of experiencing complex emotions such as experiencing difficulties with one or more of the following
Challenges in creating and maintaining relationships
Fears of abandonment
Difficulties regulating emotions
Experiencing intense emotions or feelings of detachment (dissociation)
Managing impulses, such as self-harm or suicidal thoughts
Sometimes people will use substances such as alcohol and drugs in order to numb these intense emotions
After the screening questions people who meet the criteria will be asked to complete a consent form and be invited to a baseline interview (online or in-person). In this interview the researchers will be using a diagnostic interview tool, as a research tool. We will not be giving anyone a diagnosis as part of this study. This tool will helps us understand symptoms, behaviours and experiences.
Participants in the cohort study will be asked to complete a survey every 6 months about their current symptoms, behaviours and experiences. This will allow us to map these complex emotions over time and the information will be used to invite people to additional research projects.
