Thank you for your interest in Many Faces Many Stories - a powerful, thought-provoking installation created for Festival of the Mind 2026 by sculptor Angie Hardwick in collaboration with The Complex Emotions Hub (funded by UKRI).
About the Project
Angie hosted two creative workshops over six months, with ten people who struggle with complex emotions and are part of our research study. Together, they created ten deeply personal masks - each one reflecting a Participant's unique lived experience. Angie used these, along with other creative work from a wider group of Participants, to inspire Many Faces Many Stories.
Her installation’s made-up of eight beautifully sculpted ceramic heads, on top of plinths - each expressing an important aspect of emotional complexity & dysregulation. There’s also a ninth plinth, left blank intentionally, for visitors to conjure their own creation.
The exhibit’s curated in a way that encourages visitors to pause for thought; explore each creation from different angles; & spot parts which might not be obvious at first glance.
Our Message
What we feel, how intensely we feel it, & how we cope depends on so much - our wiring, beliefs, circumstances, support systems, & what life throws at us. Because of this, everyone’s emotional journey is distinct, complex, & constantly changing. Sometimes a traumatic event, or a build-up of smaller pressures, can trigger intense, overwhelming feelings. This can cause us to withdraw, lash out, or hurt ourselves in an attempt to cope. These types of behaviours are easily misunderstood. And that’s when relationships can break down & life can unravel.
Many Faces Many Stories is designed to highlight: the diversity of our emotional landscapes; the emotional turbulence & pain some of us experience; some of the reasons behind self-defeating behaviour; that what we see at first is never the whole picture.
We’d love you to visit our exhibit - to reflect on your own emotional well-being, relationships, or a past interaction with someone - perhaps from a different perspective.
Many Faces Many Stories is on display from 6th to 15th November, at Persistence Works, 21 Brown Street, Sheffield, S1 2BS.
